In 1949, as Diners Club tells it, Frank McNamara finished dinner in Manhattan and found his wallet at home in another suit. His wife came down and paid. He returned to the same table the following February and settled the bill with a piece of cardboard, honored at twenty-seven restaurants and carried by two hundred people, most of them his friends. A year later there were 42,000. McNamara solved two problems at once. Acceptance: enough restaurants to make the card worth carrying, and enough diners to make it worth accepting. And credit: thirty unsecured days of it, on nothing but a signature. The networks settled acceptance decades ago.
