Formlabs printers steer lasers with galvanometers, hold resin at temperature, read their own tilt and vibration, and know which material is loaded into them. Firmware ties all of it together. Every day, our printers print more than 10,000 parts: surgical guides, dental restorations, hearing aid shells, and prototypes. When the firmware is wrong, a 14-hour print fails, and a clinician does not get the part they were expecting on Tuesday. We think the engineer who writes the control loop should also be able to write the kernel driver under it, the touch screen above it, and the message it sends to the cloud.
